About Us

We are a Finnish kennel, mainly focused on breeding and raising healthy dogs, with a friendly, active personality and the right body type, as the original breed standards state.

At the moment there's one young Hovawart living under our roof, a female Tammihovin Kiora "Haiku". Our previous dogs, Saint Bernards Citykarhun Brutus "Brutus" and his brother Citykarhun Bart "Poju", but unfortunately both passed away way too young due to aggressive forms of cancer.

The next dog was supposed to be a smooth-haired female Saint Bernard.

These two, Brutus and the female, was supposed to be the starting ingrediences of Kennel Vediovis, which after we could have started breeding Saints back to the healthy way they used to be, who are the correct type. Saints that look as I think they should look, and who are healthy and happy! But this plan has to be put on hold for now. After watching the Saint Bernards closely for years now, here in Finland and in other parts of the world, after going through pedigrees and health results, lifespans, I have come into a conclusion that there is almost no healthy, correct looking breeding material left in the world. Especially in Finland or other Nordic countries, nor in Baltic. So I have decided to wait and see if in the future, there would be proper Saints, after the time runs past from certain individuals. Until then, I gather resources and do more research. A new, healthier breed is where I now will turn my attention and current resources to. But I will never forget Saint Bernards, but will continue to fight for the survival of this once wonderful breed!

What comes to me, I'm Katri, -92 born young woman with a never ending love for animals; they and their well-being have always been very dear to my heart! I graduated from Kemi's Art School at August 2014 with Identity Degree, and work occasionally as a freelancer artist/photographer and translator. I am currently studying ICT/programming in Hyria Education. Our family have almost always had pets, and as for me, pets have been an unseparated part of my life since 2003.

At the moment, in addition to the dog, we have two 14 years old female cats, Gizmo "Kime", and her sister Pulla, two rabbits, a lionshead male Leevi and a mixed breed male Haru, three female chinchillas, Pyry, Tilikum and Siggy "Lily", as well as a tokay gecko male Kip Von Dexter "Kippari". In the future I'm also planning to build my own stable, 2-4 stalls in size, with paddocks, and buy a horse or two!

I also breed rabbits and chinchillas with the breeder's name Serafin, as well as occasionally African Giant Land Snails with the breeder's name Clockwork's (on hiatus).

We recide in Kemi, Lapland, Finland.

What comes to our Saintly history, I have been a dog lover, and a Saint lover my entire life! In fact, when I was born, we already had our first Saint Bernard, so I was introduced to the breed from since my birth. The Saint was named Amalia "Sandra" [Ronny Vom Baronenschloss x Rantatuulen Casandra], a half-masked bitch. She was a real sweet-heart, but also a strong-willed girl. She was also a large bitch, about 82cm - way taller than some males, which lived in the area and elsewhere as well. We had to sell her eventually because we children were too small to take her to walks and our parents had a succesful cleaning company that took all their time. But she went to live a long, happy life in the country!

Other dogs from my childhood were a Neapolitan Mastiff bitch Söpö and Chow Chow bitch named, oddly enough, JoJo - althought I called her Chow Chow, thinking we had named the dog after the breed to the last letter! They were great dogs as well, with sweet temperament and watchful eye when speaking of keeping us children out of trouble. JoJo was always keeping an eye on us, making sure we didn't get lost out of her sight. She was great with children, even playing with us and sliding down snowy hills at winter. But again, for the same reason as before, Söpö had to be sold, but she also went to a good home, becoming an outstanding guard dog, who would keep a hold on postman's pants until he was done doing his job delivering backages at the door and other things like that. JoJo had to be put down because of some nasty skin disease which couldn't be cured - we did try, but the treatment was unsuccesful, unfortunately.

The love for all these breeds had remained with me, as well as the love for other large breeds.

So, we didn't have a new dog before the year 2011. That's when I took Fido, the Finnish Spitz-Parson Russel Terrier mix male born in February, 2010, from my sister after she couldn't keep him anymore because of his excessive barking. He was a rescue dog, really, coming from a bad home where he had to fight for every meal against two larger shephard mix males. He hadn't been taught anything, so my sister had to start from a scratch with a already 9 months old dog. In the end, he came to me at the age of 1 year and 5 months. After the time spent together, he still has some problems, but we're working on them - and he has become more open, learning new tricks every day!

At the end of 2011, I decided to get another dog to keep Fido some company. I started prowsing different breeds, writing down my old favourites and new, interesting finds. And after that, I started gathering information of them, crossing all the bad choices of the list - I wanted to find a breed that wouldn't have a high prey instincts since we had cats and other smaller animals. At the end, Saint Bernard stood out amongst the others. And after reading everything I could find about the breed in various languages, I decided that this would be the right breed for me!

Then started the search for the right kennel.

I found some interesting choices and one had puppies planned to come at the spring 2012. We called there, the kennel being Saint Verna. They didn't take reservations in advance, but wrote down our number for when we would call later. When the time came and the puppies were born, we called again, but they were all already gone. But they said two other kennels that had puppies born, and after looking them over, I finally decided to contact the other. It was kennel Citykarhun. I absolutely fell in love with one of the puppies, named Citykarhun Brutus, and decided to send an inquire about him as well as one female, Citykarhun Belinda, via email. The breeder answered, saying that someone else was also interested in Brutus, but since I was the first to ask about him, I was first in live to reserve him. And of course I did so right away - I didn't have to think about it too long, he was the one for me!

And at July 4th, 2012, we finally went to pick up this cutiepie and brought him home! <3

That's what gave me the new spark with dogs and everything related to them. I started paying attention to the breed and began to notice some of the issues the breed seemed to had nowdays. And the rest is history - here we are now, a kennel ready for action for the better future of the breed!
